The Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend using a bleach solution as one way to disinfect areas contaminated with coronavirus and other contagous viruses. Cleaning regularly can help prevent the COVID-19, flu, food born illness, and more . In turn, this can help decrease other infections which can lessen the burden on our healthcare systems.  Some sanitizing tips:

1) Always have disinfectant wipes handy. A quick swipe with a disinfectant wipe can help keep germs at bay.

2) Practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. More frequent cleaning and disinfection may be required based on level of use. High touch surfaces include: Tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, sinks, etc. Give your doorknobs, light switches, railings, and other most touched surfaces a quick swipe at the beginning and end of each day.

3) Institute a frequent hand washing policy.  Germs and viruses can spread easily among students, You can disinfect your classroom to try to keep it clean, but if you want to really ensure that your classroom stays clean and healthy, make sure that students wash their hands frequently with soap and water using the approved 2 minute method. Have them wash their hands before lunch, and after they handle classroom toys, art supplies, or books.

Create a daily routine.  Set aside 5-10 minutes at the very end of the day to clean and sanitize and get the students involved whenever possible. Keep a rotating schedule for common areas and have students wipe off their own desks and chairs with disinfectant.

How do I disinfect hard surfaces in my home with a bleach solution?

Before disinfecting a surface, you should clean the area of any superficial dirt or grim.

Using the recipe recommended from the CDC and the WHO you will need:

Step one

Carefully measure the salt and water and add it to the Bleach Maker.  Turn it on and wait 8 minutes.

Step two

Wearing the gloves, apply the solution through the trigger sprayer to the hard surface, such as doorknobs or nonporous countertop.

Step three

To properly disinfect, the solution needs to be in contact with the surface for from 1 to 5 minutes.

Step four

Discard any remaining solution at the end of the day and make a fresh batch each day.

Do I need to take precautions when using bleach disinfectant?

Yes, bleach can be corrosive and cause harm to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Always use bleach in a well-ventilated area and to wear gloves when handling the product or solution. Bleach in the solution can be corrosive and can potentially damage skin and eyes.

• Never mix bleach with any product containing ammonia or acids (such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, etc.) as it’s dangerous.
